Home Makeover: Inside My Head Edition

headeditionOne of the fun things about moving is that it gives you a chance to totally re-invent your surroundings. As I work furiously to coordinate utilities, furniture and other sundry moving fun in my move back to DC; I wonder if it isn’t also about time to rearrange some things inside my head, as well?

Let’s start with the basics: I just graduated from b-school, I am starting an awesome new job and for the most part, things are looking pretty good. The question is; will the intellectual accent pieces that I considered critical to getting me to this point, carry me to the place I want to be in 5 to 10 years?

Obviously, you don’t want to eliminate the things that are already working. However, you do want to take the pieces that might not be contributing as much as they should, re-arrange them and see if you can’t make it work better with the rest of the decor.

For instance, I love blogging via Marketing Diner but I think it’s better suited to pontification and commentary than it is substantive marketing “how-to” articles. This would work great as a compliment to my more professional role in social media as well as add that zest of personality that is ever so critical to keeping people like you, reading.

This solves a little bit of the problem but what do I do now with all of these great marketing ideas? I’ve found from past experience that I do have to have an outlet to do those “how-to” posts. I also believe that, like most other marketing bloggers, I need those posts to keep up my professional credibility.

Enter Social Media MBA. For those of you who might not be familiar; I started a professional site earlier in the year as a hub for MBAs in the social media marketing and development space. The site served as a professional credential of sorts for myself and about four other MBAs. Now that I have more free time, I see a great deal of my intellectual capital going into growing Social Media MBA not only from a membership perspective, but also to help apply the MBA skill set to the social media space.

With those two pieces in mind, I am freed up to really enjoy the new space. We’ll just have to see how well it works out.

For those of you interested in joining Social Media MBA – I am going to waive membership fees for our Alpha Cohort. It gives you access to personal marketing materials, a portfolio website and much more. Click on over, fill out the membership form, and reference this post to take advantage of the offer.

For those of you who saw no point to this post, tough luck – it was probably more for my benefit than yours anyway ;-) .
