Congrats on the new job, and some great advice on here.

I would add that your best practices should be put into the context of a broader effort to brand yourself online. Blog or otherwise create compelling and valuable content online to position yourself as an authority, or at LEAST as credible. Join the conversation on others' blogs, groups online, even discussion forums (for some reason, forums are viewed more and more as passe, but I have a photography blog and see up to 20% of its daily traffic sometimes fed by a number of photography forums I frequently post on). Write guest articles on others' blogs. Ruthlessly optimize for search around your name.

Work in the networking best practices you've outlined and you will have put in more effort than 99% of the potential workforce around you - and it will show.
